How Solar Panels Work
Electricity from solar radiation can be produced directly from photovoltaic (PV) cells. (The word photovoltaic means “light” and “electricity.”) These cells are made of materials that exhibit the “photovoltaic effect,” meaning that when sunlight hits the PV cell, photons of light activate electrons in the cell, causing them to flow, producing electricity.
