The sprockets are bought ready and used only by processing the hubs in accordance with the shaft. However, in special cases, it may be necessary to manufacture or have chain gears. Since sprockets generally do not operate at high speeds, they do not need to be manufactured very precisely. In sprockets, the part where the roller sits is widened so that the roller can sit comfortably.

The upper tooth area above the scale circle is not very functional in sprockets. That's why it doesn't take too long. In order to cut the chain, the tooth is inclined from both sides. Sprockets are usually not hardened.

Thus, they wear the chain less. Chains cannot transmit motion at constant speed due to their pitched structure. An important detail about sprockets is that they cannot transmit motion uniformly. Due to its pitched structure, the sprocket transmits the uniform motion it receives from the shaft in the form of vibrations of a certain average motion.

For a smooth movement, it should not go below 17 teeth. However, this fluctuation in motion is negligible for many (slow) applications and the designer will choose small sprocket numbers to keep sprocket sizes small. However, wear, which is the main factor determining chain life in many applications, is significantly affected by these movements.

For this reason, the designer should choose between a gear with a small pitch and a large number of teeth and a gear with a small number of teeth. It may be preferable to choose gears with an odd number of teeth. Thus, the ends of the chain entering and leaving the gear will move with phase difference and will work more silently. However, in practice, the difference was not significant.
