The 5G: From Infrastructure to Vertical Sector Applications – Expectations, Opportunities, Challenges Workshop, organized in collaboration with OSTİM Technical University and the Communication Technologies Cluster (HTK), was held in the Conference Hall of the OSTİM Organized Industrial Zone Regional Directorate.

The workshop, which addressed the use of 5G in industries and its role in vertical sectors, was attended by the Deputy Ministers of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey, Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan and Mr. Osman Boyraz; the President of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), Ömer Abdullah Karagözoğlu; the Vice President, Beytullah Kuşçu; the President of UDHAM, Selami Yazıcı; the Chairman of the Board of Directors of OSTİM, Orhan Aydın; the Rector of OSTİM Technical University, Prof. Dr. Murat Yülek; the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Communication Technologies Cluster and the General Manager of Ulak, Dr. Ruşen Kömürcü; OSTİM Technical University students; and entrepreneurs.

The opening speech of the workshop was given by the Rector of OSTİM Technical University, Prof. Dr. Murat Yülek.

The success of 5G will be measured by the value generated in vertical sectors.

Dr. Ruşen Kömürcü, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HTK and General Manager of Ulak, stated that the cluster's core vision is to develop domestic and national products for 5G and subsequent technologies. Emphasizing their goal of increasing the use of 5G in vertical sectors, Kömürcü said, “The success of 5G will be measured by the value generated in vertical sectors. As HTK, we have supported efforts to develop domestic products and systems.”

“Technology cannot be produced through technology transfer”

Orhan Aydın, Chairman of the OSTİM Organized Industrial Zone Board of Directors, pointed out that the rules of war apply in technology development.

Emphasizing that technology transfer is not a valid concept, Aydın said: “Technology transfer gives you 3-4 models of outdated technology. Technology can never be produced this way. Those who possess the technology design this world and dictate its rules and regulations to us. The way out of this is to create our own technology. Turkey is doing this in the defense industry, and incredible successes are emerging. Now, as a second story, successes are emerging in communication technologies. The establishment of HTK, BTK's ownership of this work, and the Ministry's full ownership of this work are writing history. I wholeheartedly thank everyone who is writing this story. Future generations will be grateful to them. We embarked on this journey with public, university-industry cooperation, and we will not give up.”

BTK Chairman Ömer Abdullah Karagözoğlu reminded that the 5G tender mandated the use of domestic and national products. Karagözoğlu said, “As BTK, we aim for a youth that produces and uses technology consciously. We want to build an ecosystem that not only uses but also develops 5G technology.”

“The steps taken today in 5G will determine the competitiveness of the industry tomorrow.”

Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan reminded everyone of OSTİM's role in domestic and national production in communication technologies.

Stating that the main factor making 5G a game-changer is time saving, Sayan said, “5G is an infrastructure layer on which new solutions and services can be built. 5G enables the transition from a human-centered internet to an internet of things. The steps we take today regarding 5G will determine how competitive the industry will be tomorrow. Countries that remain end-users in terms of technology cannot guarantee their freedoms in any way. 5G will be a starting point for us, a springboard for Turkey. It is in our hands to transform it into social benefit.”

Within the scope of the workshop, sectoral applications and government support were discussed in panels titled "Achievements, Opportunities and Challenges in Ongoing Infrastructure and Service Preparations within the Framework of Turkey's 5G Targets" and "Expectations, Opportunities and Challenges of Industrial Users within the Scope of 5G Vertical Sector Applications".
