The Communication Technologies Cluster (HTK) 5G Phase 2 Information Meeting was held at the OSTİM Conference Hall. Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Karaismailoğlu noted that while an 8-layer radio unit was developed in the first phase for 5G base stations, they will develop 64-layer radio products in subsequent phases, stating, “Thus, we will offer domestic and national 5G products to the market as an alternative to the products of foreign suppliers.”
Adil Karaismailoğlu stated that they are continuing their efforts to support the next phases of the End-to-End Domestic and National 5G Communication Network Project, and that they are addressing the future of the information technology sector under three headings: "Domestic production, high technology, and global brands. If we can achieve success in the IT sector in these three phases, Turkey will make great strides both in closing its current account deficit and in exports."
Karaismailoğlu stated that they established HTK in 2017 to develop a domestic and national production ecosystem in the electronic communications sector, and that the cluster has reached an important position for the domestic production ecosystem since then. He added that they strategically plan all kinds of investments related to information technology. Karaismailoğlu emphasized, “If you don't produce knowledge, if you don't transform the knowledge you produce into a product and market that product to the world, neither your development nor your progress is possible. Using the technologies of other countries is no longer sustainable in terms of national resources and interests.”
Minister Karaismailoğlu, recalling that they developed the End-to-End Domestic and National 5G Communication Network Project with HTK companies, said, “One of the most important pillars of domestic and national production efforts is the first phase of our project, in which the most important technology companies of our country participated, and which was completed in March 2021. With this project, critical network hardware and software specific to 5G technology, such as 5G base stations, 5G core network, 5G network management and operational software, and 5G virtualization platform, were developed.”
“We aim for a Turkish company to compete on a global scale.”
Adil Karaismailoğlu stated that some tests are being conducted on the end-to-end 5G network created using domestic and national products. Recalling that they established Global Telekom and Integrated Technologies Inc. with 10 companies that carried out important tasks in the project, Karaismailoğlu stated: “This company represents cooperation and synergy in the sector, as well as managing the commercialization and branding activities of the products developed within the scope of the project from a single source. With Global Telekom and Integrated Technologies Inc., we aim for a Turkish company to compete globally with companies like Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia in the telecommunications field. In the next phases of the End-to-End Domestic and National 5G Communication Network Project, we will produce higher capacity and more advanced versions of the products I just mentioned. For example, while an 8-layer radio unit was developed for the 5G base station in the first phase, we will develop 64-layer radio products in the next phases. Thus, we will offer domestic and national 5G products to the market as an alternative to the products of foreign suppliers. Work continues to support the next phases of the project. We will transition to 5G in our country by using domestic and national network products to the maximum extent.”
Karaismailoğlu emphasized that one of the primary goals of the domestic production efforts in the country is to open up to foreign markets with these products. Stating that the nationalization of critical components for 5G and beyond technologies is a fundamental priority, Minister Karaismailoğlu said, “We have taken significant steps to support and protect the domestic and national production ecosystem on the road to 5G. Going forward, we will continue to develop the most suitable solutions by also taking into account the opinions of our sector stakeholders.”
OSTİM Board Chairman Orhan Aydın pointed out that the communications sector is a critical area. Aydın underlined the support of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority, and TÜBİTAK for the 5G project, and stated that producing national technologies in this field is important for the future of our country.
